New Research Project: Making Carbon Removal Work for Sustainable Development
Accelerating Sub-Saharan Africa's Carbon Dioxide Removal Startup Ecosystem
This 3-year project funded by the Swiss National Fund aims to identify, assess, and accelerate viable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, linking carbon removal with sustainable development and job creation.
The project will be structured around three work packages:
Technology Scoping: Identifying CDR technologies and parts of the value chain with the highest potential for domestic socio-economic benefits.
Country Readiness Assessment: Assessing the readiness of three archetypical Sub-Saharan African countries to understand the region's potential.
Startup Accelerator: Running a six-month structured CDR startup accelerator (in two separate batches) dedicated to the key technologies and bottlenecks identified in the first two work packages.
Driving Questions
Which emerging CDR technologies have the greatest sustainable development potential for Sub-Saharan Africa?
Which parts of the value chain are particularly attractive for Sub-Saharan Africa?
Which local factors are critical for developing a domestic CDR ecosystem and deploying CDR technologies?
How can the NGO REmove’s carbon removal startup accelerator in Europe be modified to be most impactful for Sub-Saharan African startups?
